Steep Elk Mountain  Sucess!

Beautiful views from the summit, but a steep, steep climb up the trail. No scrambling needed, but would probably be more fun with it! :p

Rough Day on a Steep Trail  Sucess!

Summer 2012

Elk may have been my roughest day on a mountain in Glacier. Climbed with Jose y Borja on a particularly HOT day in the park. The trail was steep, and the stream crossings were depleted to gurgling brooks. We bathed in a small snow patch found near the top. A total surprise after a pleasant, beautiful day on the Mt. Henry 4 mountain ridgewalk!

Easter Sunday Climb  Sucess!

Took advantage of a beautiful blue sky day and am pretty sure I had the whole southern end of the park all to myself. Couldn't think of a better church to spend Easter in than Glacier.

Good conditioning hike  Sucess!

I have read that Mt Brown LO is the steepest trail in the park, but I think Elk Mtn might actually be steeper. Great views from the top -- picked out Loneman and Scalplock LOs, Henry, Flinsch, Great Northern, Pinchot. Wind not as bad at the summit as it was on the way up!

steep trail!  Sucess!

Very, very steep trail to the top. Interesting views from the top, including a great perspective on the Ole Creek drainage and mighty Mount St. Nicholas. Watched a wicked storm brewing over Two Medicine north of Firebrand Pass, but my hour on the summit was generally quite sunny and warm. Loved getting to see a different area of the park from up top.

With Eli Behrhorst on December 10, 2011. The previous day, I set out to hike to Firebrand Pass and climb Red Crow or Calf Robe, but fierce winds cut, biting cold and post holing cut my day short. Still windy and chilly the next day when we hiked up Elk, but conditions were much more bearable! Found a nice spot a few feet below the summit, behind a wall of crusty snow to escape the winds up top!
