Sierra Ledge Rat (Yank who now hails from West Virginia)WhatSeneca Rocks is a fin of quartize in the eastern mountains of Almost Heaven, West Virginia. It is one of the major rock-climbing centers in West Virginia, second to the New River Gorge.WhereMarjorie, John and I have known each other for over 10 years. We first met each other during an international caving trip to Iceland in the year 2000. Since then, we have been caving together on Jeju Island (Korea), Far North Queensland (Australia) and Victoria (Australia).
WhenMarjorie and John were looking to see the fall colors here in Appalachia. So we chose to climb Seneca Rocks on October 16, 2011.
WhyWhy? Take a look for yourself.
John at the visitor's center. The tourist trail zig-zags up the hillside on the far left of the photo to the observation platform. The final scramble follows the left skyline of the left summit.
The very short class 2+ scramble to the summit of Seneca Rocks. Wet quartizite is slick as ice!!!
