Re: Love itThanks for the comment. The son in the photo, who couldn't have been more than 8 or 10 years old, was very eager and climbed surprisingly well - we had met them shortly before.

It's stupid and irresponsibleto take a 8- year-old boy on the via ferrata like Ferrata delle Trincee. The whole responsibility lies on his overambitious father. The boy climbed well OK, but especially in the Dolomites, I noticed even another events involving children on difficult mountain tracks.

Re: It's stupid and irresponsibleHarsh words, and I think not fair. We spent 15 or 20 minutes talking with them. The father was very fit, athletic, and obviously experienced, the boy completely confident, happy and not one bit tired, both had all necessary equipment. I have also seen people with children behaving irresponsibly in the mountains, but not this happy couple.

Re: It's not stupid and irresponsibleI agree with you Ejnar sometimes poeple see what is in the picture only and judge that only. I have been a outdoors adventureous person my whole life and with that you learn the dangers and the resposiblity that comes with those dangers. I as a parent started my children in the outdoors at a young age not forcing them on adventures but taking them on adventures that they could learn about the dangers , there were times we had to turn around because of natures certain storms and also my kids sometimes not wanting to listen to what I would have to say to them about these dangers. So we would have to come back another day when they would listen. I recently returned from Canada climbing multi pitch ice climbs with my son who is 28 years old and he still thanks me for my teaching him the ways of being safe and to avoid most dangers of the outdoors. I started him climbing when he was 8 years old and took him on hikes when he was old enough to walk. I have great respect for that father in the way he is teaching his son. I hpoe they can enjoy a life time of those kind of adventures and thank you very much for showing those on summit. Chees and best of luck to you and your wife. from The ice man Jerry

Yes, as you say, and as I see it, the father in this photo was actually doing a great job teaching his son how to move in steep rock on a ferrata. From what we heard from the father he had taken his son gradually on more difficult stretches, and there could be absolutely no doubt that the son enjoyed it. He will remember all his life how his father introduced him to mountains and climbing, and they will probably be able to climb together for decades to come, like you with your son.

Re: You have toWell, yes, we had our children on their first mountain, Flattop in the Rocky Mountain National Park when they were four and two and a half years old. When they were eleven and nine they were on top of the Wildspitze in Austria, but still none of them climb now!
