Reach the Passo Pordoi (famous from Giro d'Italia) by car from Canazei or Arabba. Plenty of parking space before 9 a.m. Completely packed by the time you return.
From the pass you can either take the cable car to the Sass Pordoi summit where you can descent and traverse to the start of the Via Ferrata. But it's much mort rewarding and enjoyable to start walking from the Pordoi Pass towards the German World War I memorial - you can even take a quick look inside - from were a trail leads you to the base of the cable route in 1 to 1,5 hours.
The start of the vertical climb is marked by a metal plaque. This is where you put on your climbing gear.
The route zigzags up the steep wall over a few ledges, the start of the route is a good indicator of the difficulties to come. If you have no problems with the first 30 meters, you'll do fine.
This is a very popular route, so many hand- and footholds are worn and slippery. Look for out-of-the-way holds if you want to avoid this.
A big ledge will lead you to a narrow chimney. Good fun for the rockclimbers amongst us. If it wasn't for that darn daypack that's in your way. This is the hardest move. After that you cross a small suspension bridge, this brings you to the second section of steep but much easier rock.
Once this is over with, you scramble to the summit over loose rock. This section is no longer equipped and requires a rope if you're not comfortable on UIAA II grade rock.
To descent, follow the crowd towards the Pordoi cable lift and from Refugio Forc. Pordoi walk down the Pordoi gully to the parking in 1,5 hours (or 45 minutes if you run).
Depending on the traffic and your pace: 4 to 6 hours round trip.
Normal Via Ferrata gear: Helmet, Climbing harness with Via Ferrata kit, gloves (bike gloves without fingers work great if weather permits). Rope, only if you're not used to this kind of climbing.
