| Two days before, a big load of fresh snow had fallen in the Alps. Because of avalanche danger, many peaks were out, and hiking in the fresh snow was hard work.
We were in the Stettiner Hütte. Our goal was the Hochwilde, but that was too dangerous and so we went to the Schöne Aussicht Hütte, still high up, hoping for improvement. And we got it! The next morning it was sunny and bright, and also very cold, and so we had no trouble with the snow at all. Besides that, while we had been sloggin' through more than half a meter of fresh snow in the higher valleys of the Texel group, the rocks on the Fineilspitze were almost bare. Perhaps the snow had been blown off by the wind?
I'm not quite sure where exactly we stepped from the glacier onto the rocks, but the last bit of the ascent was on the SSW ridge. We descended the normal route to the NE and went to the Hochjoch Hospiz. |
