Going Up  Sucess!

Lost track of how many times up this trail. Now that I think about it, have I ever found the summit?

well-trodden-tourist-track  Sucess!

Escaped the rainy day on the Front Range and hiked up above the (lower) cloud deck to find the Continental Divide nice and dry, and actually warmer than the moist, miserable weather below. A quick jaunt over to Hallet from here to catch a sweet view of the Divide above the clouds.

Backpacking  Sucess!

Nabbed it while backpacking. Probably one of the least satisfying peaks I've seen, but hey, it's a mountain. The view is nice, but you can get the same view anywhere in that general area.

On the way to Hallet  Sucess!

We climbed it on our way to Hallet Peak. It was extremely cold on Flattop and my uncle had to wait here with a marmot.

From Bear Lake TH  Sucess!

Hiked up the trail and over the seriously flat top of this mountain. Where is the actual summit?? Then on to Hallett Peak.

Easy start to a long day above timberline  Sucess!

Nice, early start meant I saw no one on the trail on the way up or summit. Then to Ptarmigan Pt, Sprague Mtn (by mistake!) and finally Knobtop Mtn. Long day, perfect weather!

Hourglass Couloir  Sucess!

Amazing. This was my first couloir. I liked how it kept getting more steep towards the end, until your at almost 60 degrees at the top. When i popped up off that, all the tourists were taking my picture and pointing, it was hilarious. Beautiful day for a snow climb. not the best approach though.

This was my first hiking trip to the Rockies, and my first summit. We wanted to go up to Hallet, but weather was coming in so we headed down.

My first big mountain  Sucess!

Flattop was my first "big" mountain climb. I was so elated to make it to the top.
I returned 4/23/2007 to go up the Dragon's Tail Couloir.

No name / Scottish Coulior

This was my second visit to Flattop. This time I decided to take a "backdoor" up the Scottish / No name Couloir on the south side. This was my first couloir climb, so I confess to being totally exhausted by the time I reached the top. I skipped the last 25 vertical feet or so to the summit. Why? Dunno. I was pooped, it was cold, and I had already put my feet on the summit years ago. (Man, I get lazy as I age.) Glissaded down "Banana Shutes" and shuffled on back to the truck.

Standard route  Sucess!

A fairly uncomplicated hike, except that we had our two children of 4½ and 2½ years with us (their first climb). The oldest, our son, did very well both up and down. Our daughter kept complaining about "all the stones", and to get her to the top I had to carry her the last 15 minutes, and promise to carry her all the way down. Since she weighed 30 pounds, I got quite tired in the arms! We lowed the view from the top, very nice scenery.
