Frozen Waterfall on Anamakit-Angarsky, Transbaikalia

The two Anamakit Rivers, Anamakit-Angarsky to the South and Anamakit-Mamsky to the North, provide the most direct approach to Upper Angara Range from the railroad town of Novy Uoyan.

Anamakit-Angarsky has a cascade of several frozen waterfalls in winter, none taller than 5 or 6 m. Still it took us longer than expected to negotiate the cascades, and we had to bivvy on the river ice mid-canyon. Luckily, with a bit of exposed climbing, we were able to reach a dead tree on a canyon wall, and to drop it down to the river. With the firewood, it looked a whole lot more comfy in this icy, windy, dark hole (even though the campfire eventually sunk into its own meltwater).
