From Point 8479, this is part of Glacier National Park's Garden Wall, a knife-edge ridge on the Continental Divide and which leads to Mount Gould. From this vantage point, as you can see, there are excellent views of Upper Grinnell Lake, Grinnell Glacier, Salamander Glacier, and Gem Glacier. And what looks like fog below and right of the ridge is actually a smoke inversion caused by the 2003 fires. From the porch at Granite Park Chalet at night, we could see the flames in the valleys below. This was both spectacular and ominous.

"Sea of clouds trapped naturally by a mountain dam" by SP member eric b. I like that. Very much. Thanks, Eric.

Hasn't voted | Thank you. You'd better get out by 2030, which is the time by which many projections have the real glaciers disappearing. It's a shame. | | Posted Aug 5, 2008 10:02 am |

Hasn't voted | Based on the warnings not to in the J. Gordon Edwards guide, I'm guessing it has been, but I don't actually know of any successful traverses. I'd love to give it a go one day, though. | | Posted Jul 31, 2009 10:02 pm |

Hasn't voted | Sorry I saw the (dawn) after I submitted, where do you access this shot, logan pass? | | Posted Jan 1, 2010 9:22 pm |
 | | Bob Sihler | Re: Great shot | |
Hasn't voted | You can get there from Logan Pass or from The Loop, which is west of the pass on GTTS Road. It's longer but easier from Logan Pass-- about 8 miles with moderate elevation changes along the Highline Trail. About a mile east of Granite Park Chalet, there is a trail that ascends the Garden Wall to overlook Grinnell Glacier. This view is from a scramble above that overlook, but the trail view is very similar. | | Posted Jan 2, 2010 5:35 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thanks-- I really liked your Goddard Ice and Ionian Basin shots myself. The former had me thinking it looked like something out of the Antarctic. | | Posted Feb 16, 2010 8:42 pm |

Voted 10/10 | Thanks. I'm heading back out there this summer.
The Ionian Basin is one of the most beautiful and remote areas in the Sierras. Well worth the effort. | | Posted Mar 2, 2010 10:46 am |
