Took the Ridge Trail to the summit. Loved this trail's open and rocky sections. Continued on to Rocky Mountain Ridge. The 800ft of vertical returning straight up Giant was a #!%@#!

excellent day hike, great view of the ADK peaks. Took Roaring Brook to the summit, and the Ridge Trail > crossover > Roaring Brook on the way down.

zofonSnowy Ascent  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 17, 2002
Climbed this mountain for the first time on May 17th, 2002 in the last snow of the season. There was 3" of snow near the top. It was snowing quite hard while I was up top. When its not snowing, its a very nice hike in both winter and summer. It can get crowded in the summer (I saw 70 people on the summit on an August day).

Climbed Giant via the Ridge Trail from Chapel Pond with my brother. We had good weather, and the views were obscured at times by clouds, but they broke once we got on top. A very nice time!

Solo hike up Giant. Had a bit too much to drink the night before, so this was a slow, soberingly cold day. Also tagged Rocky Peak Ridge.

Nice Ascent. First time in the winter, had prevously summited during the summer. Light snow made for no views at the summit.

I think this was my favorite hike of the (9) 4,000 ers that I did. I enjoyed the scrambling up the rock faces and my feet stayed dry the entire time.

Saved this one for the fall so I could hopefully see some nice fall colors. Good God did that strategy work out! Amazing sights from this mountain showing the Adirondacks in their fall best. Outstanding clear day. Got an early start and beat the crowds going up while I was going down. Really was just an outstanding day.

Drizzly humid day, feeling sluggish, spent a lot of time scuffing water bars. One passing hiker seemed to think that was a crazy idea, but higher up I saw some recently scuffed!

Giant via Ridge Trail in winter... bring crampons (and snowshoes of course). In several places water flows right down the trail, and forms thick water ice...like "climbing" a gently sloping waterfall. The trees are thick, so going around these ice sections is not much of an option, either. The upside: This is a short hike, I soloed Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge together in 6 hours round trip (trails already broken out).

Weather was a mess, trails are brooks, and the hike is steep. Nonetheless, a great day in the ADK.

My very first solo climb. My trusty Atlas 10-30's were great, but crampons were definitely needed for almost the whole climb. Lots and lots of ice. Incredible views of Noonmark and Round Mtn, as well as Rocky Peak Ridge.
I took a stab at Rocky Peak after doing Giant, but an icewall about 1/3 down Giant prevented further progress. Very arduous climb through the snow back to the junction.

Great day to be on Giant. Crampons were needed for at least 1/3 of the trail, snowshoes were worthless past the first 600 feet ascent. Clear views of the range, one of the last beautiful days of winter. Descent made for fantastic self arrest practice on sketchy/icy parts.

My wife & her parents went up the Nubble, and I hiked up Giant alone from there. Well, not really alone because it was Labor day weekend and this is a popular mountain. It was a fun, steep climb, though, with plenty of views on the way up. The view from the summit is phenomenal, with dozens of major peaks visible. One of the most interesting summits in the ADKs with its steep dropoff & slides below.
