Gonepteryx rhamni

Gonepteryx rhamni

Gonepteryx rhamni / Brimstone, likely the most common among the butterflies of Gorski Kotar. On the upper side the male is sulphur yellow. The female is paler and more white with a greenish tinge. They both have an orange spot in the center of each wing. Sized 52-60mm, this member of Pieridae family was long believed to be the namesake for the word Butterfly as such, due to its butter-coloured fly - like appearance. Often first butterfly to jump out of the winter hibernation and get into the flight action, Brimstone is also regarded Methuselah among the butterflies as they can live for more then a year. Local name Obični žućak reflects its common appearance and translates as Common Yellow
