I took the Weld Trail from St. Huberts. I stopped to see Rainbow Falls beforehand. Gothics is a great mountain! I made a loop and did Sawteeth on the way back.

This peak has one of the better views in the ADK's. Saw a bush plane fly right under us through the valley. That was pretty cool.

Climbed from Pyramid/Lake Road/AMR. This is a good way to go for anyone who wants to avoid the steep, icy approach from the Saddleback trail juncture.

This one was amazingly easy. I had expected more from what I heard. Plenty of snow, ice, and wind at this point.

I've been wanting to climb the cables route ever since seeing it from Basin/Saddleback several years ago. I stayed at Johns Brook Lodge for the weekend and had a perfect day to do Gothics/Armstrong/UWJ/LWJ. Blue skies and 70 degrees. The scrambling was fun near the top, didn't need to use the cables. Talked to two guys who had spent the night on top, under the stars. Awesome views of pretty much all the major peaks/ranges.

Was still feeling good at this point - not sure at first if I was on Armstrong or Gothics, and not concerned either way. Not so confident as to join WWBF and Mudrat in a side trip up Pyramid, but enjoying a day on the ridge.

The OgreSawteeth, Gothics, Armstrong, and the Wolf Jaws from the Ausable Club  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jan 25, 2006

The Ogre

4am start, solo. 1st Winter 46 hike, and 1st time on these peaks. Hiked the packed snow on the road from the parking to the dam. Broke trail from the dam to Pyramid-Sawteeth col, saw sunrise from the col. Wow. Summited Sawteeth (1st W46 summit!) and then back down; still breaking trail most of the way up Pyramid. An ADK group from Albany caught up with me while I was taking a break and I summited Pyramid (sub-peak of Gothics) with them. They were grateful to have followed my tracks all the way from the dam. Then they broke trail over Gothics' summit and all the way to Armstrong's summit; I was taking my time snapping photos on Gothics so I got to follow a broken trail finally. I caught up with them again on Armstrong's summit. They were heading back down to the Ausable Valley, so I ended up breaking trail alone again, till I was taking a break sitting in the middle of the trail while descending Armstrong to Upper Wolf Jaw. It was then that Rejean glissaded (on his butt) into me. A great hiking partnership was born! We summited Upper and Lower Wolf Jaws together. We then parted ways again, as we were parked at different trailheads. I then proceeded to lose the unbroken trail after traversing LWJ, it got dark out, and I had to bushwhack out and down through thick spruce, between cliffs and down a rockslide, and finally down a steep, half-frozen creek for several miles. Sorry to write such a long log entry, but it was a helluva hike. Planning to write a trip report about it eventually - I learned a lot that day! Still hiking with Rejean - just did a Presidential Range (New Hampshire) traverse with him - one day, 20 miles, 9000' total ascent! Finally someone who can keep up with me;-)

College days- probably my favorite peak in the ranges- steeper and more interesting than some of the other. Got 28 of 46 before heading West.

Brilliant climbing on the north face! Thin easy ice at the bottom with a snow gully in the center of the face. The topout was thin ice again and then an amazing big cornice right on top. We descended the ridge trail to the south and back to out skies for the ski out to the Garden.

Great alpine route. Lower fifth class for 5-7 pitches if you rope up. We did it ropeless and thoroughly enjoyed the slabs! I wonder if there is a direct route up the middle of the face? Would also make a stellar winter outing.
