Via Grand Traverse
SarahT and myself banged this out with a fresh blanket of icy snow. This was an extremely fun ridge to scramble/climb. The descent down to Deluge Lake was quick and a moderatly quick hike out. Froze in the morning & baked in the afternoon.
We had a Pika come to about 3 feet of us on the summit! Cute little bugger!

Alone on the face
Getting a healthy alpine start to ensure good conditions, I climbed up the SE face, on snow, almost the entire way. I climbed solo. The summit snow drift was melted back just enough that with the help of my adze, I was able to get at the register. I spent about an hour on the summit eating Swiss chocolate and watching Vail wake up and head to work that Tuesday morning. The Grand Traverse to North Traverse Peak looked…uh…very interesting to say the least, from a climber’s perspective! The Gores still have me in awe…what a sick (and beautiful) looking range! I descended the standard route.

Summited from Deluge Basin. 3am start, 7pm finish. Made a quick exit straight down to the packed out Gore Creek trail. Eric H. joined me with invaluble help packing the trail even though he forgot the Oreo cookies. 50 SPF sunscreen a must! Felt like 70 degrees on the summit with a windless day and plenty of sun. And yes, it can be done safely with 15 hours of work. Also, we found crampons can be fitted to telemark boots just fine for a summit approach.

Awesome. I had been staring at it from Vail for two years while living there, and it did not let down. We summited all of the spires along the traverse except for three, which were more technical with LOTS of exposure. A must do.
Route Climbed: North Traverse to Grand Traverse traverse
The traverse between the two peaks (North Traverse and Grand Traverse) looks fierce from below, but in reality its pretty easy except for one climb up a buttress. I forgot my boots, so did the entire traverse in tennis shoes.
Route Climbed: Southeast Face/East Ridge Date Climbed: 8 August, 2005
I made my way up thinking that I'd have the area and especially the summit to myself on a Monday. Badly mistaken. There were 11 other people on the summit who had climbed from a camp on the East side. Still an awesome view.

Climbed for the first time with the Hoosier Trekkers, an Indiana University alumni hiking club. Although not an IU alum, SP regular Aaron Johnson was on this trip and provided great peak information once we were on the summit.
The traverse leading to Deluge Lake, while long, is rather easy. Once at the lake, the final 1,270 feet vertical is a steep rock scramble.
Once on the summit, the views are great, especially of Mt. Powell and Mt. of the Holy Cross.

Beautiful fall day, the aspens on the approach were just past peak color. Some snow on the southeast slopes, but nothing problematic. After eyeing this peak for so long it felt great to be a part of everyone's view from Vail!

Grand Traverse is a good beginner hike for the Gore Range proper. It is steep as hell, but it is non technical. The Deluge Lake Basin is a memorable place as well. While your up there go and get Snow Peak and Valhalla Peak as well.

Left Colorado Springs at about 2am to start hiking at around 5:00. The hike up is steep (but I guess that's why they call it climbing). Once near the lake, the views are awesome, and it just gets better as you climb. This is a great route, with some of the best views I've seen so far.
