Grand View

Grand View

Sorry-- couldn't resist that corny title. Better in Orig The world's best view of the Grand Teton? Arguable, but what's not is that it's a very secluded view. From the summit of Mount Leidy, you look across the Mount Leidy Highlands and Jackson Hole to the giants of the Cathedral Group. You can see this perspective from the road through Grand Teton National Park, albeit from almost 4000' lower, but up here, the traffic and the crowds don't exist. Re: Hey Great Tetons....

Thanks, Jason. I'd read that this view was a really nice one, but I never expected the peaks to seem so big and close as they were.

Re: How far

From here, straight-line distance is 20-25 miles, or 32-40 kilometers. The peaks seem closer, though, maybe because they are so huge relative to the surroundings.

Hmmmm ..

Corny titles must be good for attracting votes here on SP ???

Re: Hmmmm ..

Doing corny things always does attract attention, though not necessarily the good kind...

Grand from any angle

I remember how the Grand Teton looked in 1950. I first saw it from the highway north of Jackson. It looked immense and unclimbable. However two days later a young man employed by Glenn Exum led me cringingly to its summit. Along with Mount Rainier I consider this peak to be the paramount mountaineering experience in the American west.

Re: Not corny at all...

Thanks-- it was certainly nicer than seeing this from the park road!

The thing I like...

...about this image is that the foreground is actually...interesting. A photo built of two distinct halves, and it all makes sense. Nice!

Re: The thing I like...

Thanks, Vernon. In that foreground is a subtly beautiful wilderness.

Re: Very beautiful!

Thank you, Christina. I hope you do visit these mountains someday, just as I hope to visit Scandinavia, especially the Arctic. If you do visit here, don't hesitate to contact me for suggestions about what to do.
