Mt Mitchell-Charons garden Mountain-Granite Mountain combo  Sucess!

From Charon Garden mountain I scrambled down to Styx canyon. From there I continued west sw towards Granite. This part was my favorite of the hike. The grassy area was surrounded by granite peaks on all side. Lots of tracks and evidence of wildlife with bird songs echoing from the boulders. The remoteness of the area and the views made the whole trip worth it. Found a gully on the west face of Granite mountain and scrambled up. Class 3 mostly with maybe a couple of class 4 scrambling. Saw 2 elks on the way up. Scrambled down to the canyon between twin and granite and followed it out to Elk Mtn wilderness trail.

Whew...it sure gets warm in January. Perfect day for a bushwack (no vegatation, bugs or snakes). Just doesn't get much better than this.

Route Climbed: East Slopes Date Climbed: January 21, 2005  Sucess!

Jackie and I bushwacked up the east slope to a false summit, then on to the real summit. Did a traverse over to Twin Rocks, then down the Twin Rocks Canyon.

It would have been a better day had the F-18s not been flying that day. The noise put a damper on an otherwise perfect day.

Route Climbed: Twin Rocks Canyon, Post Oak Lake(ish) Date Climbed: November 22, 2004; January 17, 2005  Sucess!

I as well noticed the concrete. Other than that disappointing discovery, it was a great climb. Due to the weather conditions, visibility was reduced to about 50 yards.

Returned in 2005, roughly followed Post Oak Lake, descended west face, and ascended Charons Garden Mountain. Good day in nice weather.

Did you notice the concrete on top? I wonder what was up there?
