jpbourqueGray, Redfield and Cliff from Lake Colden  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 8, 2011
Canadian thanksgiving weekend. Summer weather throughout. We left Montreal at 3 pm and started hiking at 7 pm in the dark from South Meadows. We camped at avalanche lake tent site. Next morning we dropped our stuff at Lake Colden and hiked Gray from Lake Tear. First unmaintained trail to summit. The day after, we hiked Redfield from Uphill lean-to and met a lady 46er and her son. Desccended to the fork with the trail to Cliff Mt. An a propos name for that mountain. On the 10th we hiked back to the car and stopped at the Mountaineers in Keene.

Not too impressed with this peak this day(overcast and drizzle).. only recommend it if you're going for the 46. It's hard to justify choosing this peak over Haystack, Skylight or Marcy.. Probably would be a nice winter climb when the snow is over the trees.. #21

Views were good because the snow was at least 6 feet deep. Had to dig down to the summit sign.

First ones to the summit since the last snow. My friend Chris (already a 46er) broke trail.

The oddest high peak, a top ten'r with lots of cripplebrush. I'm going going back in time to beef up my logs. What a loser ...

This was beautiful on this day.All in part of a 6 summit 2 day adventure. With over 4ft of packed snow upon the summit raising us above the trees opened up some hidden secrets only visible in the heart of winter from this mountain.I raise my personal rankings 7 points for this baby...JW

This was part of a 4 mountain day.The ascent was easy, but the bushwhack back to marcy was the hardest mile I've ever done.Hidden drop offs, impenetrable cripplebrush and swarming blackflies add to the fun.The NYS DEC is stopping people from hiking across this direction now due to people getting hurt and damage to the alpine vegetation on the slopes of Marcy.I've done it and wouldn't try again anyhow...Jim w

Hiked from Lake Colden, there was one tricky spot, but overall a pretty easy hike.

Tahawus

Climbed with Skylight via the Uphill Brook Trail from Tahawus. The path to the top was pretty easy going and the summit provided excellent views of Marcy, Skylight, Redfield and the other peaks in the surrounding area. Lake of the Clouds was a nice treat as well.

Scrambled over from near treeline on Marcy above Lake Tear. I recall the spruce thicket being difficult but not impossible.

The OgreGray (between Marcy and Skylight) March 2006

The Ogre

Van Ho trail from the ADK Loj. Marcy, bushwhacked to Gray and down, back up to Four Corners and Skylight. Out via Lake Arnold. Solo. Bushwhack down Gray very hard; not on herd path. 7-8 feet (2 meters) snow on Gray that was melting in the midday sun. Horrible spruce traps; I needed 2 hours to go 1/2 mile downhill on Gray. (If you don't know what a "spruce trap" is, send a pm and I'll explain. I'm sure many of you do know, and many of you don't, or at least don't know the slang term "spruce trap.")

Climbing up Gray Peak ended my quest to climb the ADK 46 and also the Northeastern 111's (115). Hiked with a great bunch of guys and had bad weather set in, preventing us from cracking open our bottle of champagne until we made a brief stop at Marcy Dam for just that purpose.

Spent two cold days bagging the High Peaks. Hit Algonquain, Coldon and Gray, spent a brutally cold night in a lean-to then hit Skylight, Marcy and Phelps. We were past peak for the foliage thus making this a cold overcast and gloomy adventure.

This hike (7.5 miles, 3000 feet in under 4 hours) convinced me that I could climb all 46 Adirondack High Peaks. After reaching Marcy, I climbed nearby Skylight, and Gray.

I also bushwacked the ridge over to marcy, it was kind of tight, and no place for a full pack. I lost my new eyeglasses when my pack ripped open somwhere up there.

This peak is CLEARLY visible from Marcy; we went down marcy straight for it. Tight in places but all in all no problem. I would recommend this way as opposed to going down marcy to Lake tear and then up. That would be WAY harder and impractical.
