| I first ticked this one off after ascending Torrey's Kelso Ridge route. It had rained hard that morning so the crowds were refreshingly sparse. Not so on my subsequent trip. We had to deal with a pair of obstinate hikers who didn't see the need to yield to a faster group (us) descending at a jog to escape impending weather. Rather than cause a scene we quietly cut the switchback and continued on our way. Can't really blame them, they were scared and we shouldn't have been there in the first place. We pushed for the 'summit' in zero visibility to make a worthwhile training day out of it rather than turn back early. Why? We'd been on top of Gray's before. Avoid the tourist routes on Colorado 14'ers, train low, climb faster: climb safer. | |

| Had a great trip up Grays Peak today. Betsy and I took 3 friends that had never climbed a 14ner. 2 of which had never climbed anything about 10000ft. We had a perfect day with great weather and views. Around 2:30, right before getting back to the trailhead, we saw a few snowflakes, but then it cleared up again. The conditions on the trail are good. However, it gets a little treacherous during the afternoon when the snow on the trail gets slushy. | |
