Not So Great North Mountain
I did an approximately ten-mile out-and-back hike from SR 55. I passed the Gerhard Shelter and eventually stood on a rock formation that I guessed was the high point on that section. The only view I had all day was from a powerline clearing. It's not a good hike to do in summer.

Not a soul
Hiked from Waites Run, up the Tuscarora trail to the Gerhard Shelter. Then down the Gerhard Shelter Trail to Vances Cove Trail and finally back on the Wilson Cove Trail. Did not see a single person on this 11.6 mile hike.
My usual itenerary starts at Wolfe Gap and travels past Big Schloss before finally camping atop half-moon mountain. It is one of the few local places in which one can see a total of two lights at night when looking west.

Hiked the part of the length of GNM on a gorgeous fall weekend. Camped at the Gerhard shelter and at a primitive site south of the second road crossing. Very nice. Great company and great hike.
