Große Ohrenspitze (3101m) east ridge from Almerhorn

The saddle between Almerhorn and Große Ohrenspitze is the Jägerscharte (2870m), visible lower down on the left. Earlier in the day I had climbed the Große Ohrenspitze, but not from this side. After explaining that I rarely climb solo if it's beyond UIAA grade III, I had asked a local about the possibility of descending the east ridge, which, in distance, is the shortest way to get to the Jägerscharte. The answer was that he didn't exactly knew the grade, but it should not be too difficult. When I was on the summit, looking down the ridge, the clouds moved in so I didn't see much. But what I could see didn't look easy at all, so I descended the way I had come up, via the Ohrenscharte. Soon the weather improved, and now, on the Almerhorn, I can see the east ridge and I'm quite glad I didn't try to descend it! Later I looked it up, and learned that this ridge has one spot of UIAA grade IV and a lot of III and II. Definitely not the sort of thing I want to solo. To the right, partly blocked by the Große Ohrenspitze, is the somewhat lower Mittlerer Ohrenspitze (3005m). The Ohrenscharte (2898m) (not visible) is the saddle between the two, easily reached from the north. From there it's scrambling up to UIAA grade II to the Große Ohrenspitze, mostly much easier. The remnant of a glacier at the base of the Ohrenspitze is the Almerkees. 3 August 2014.
