Watched Sunset  Sucess!

Amazing sunset. Full moon kind of killed the star gazing.

Long line of cars.....

A non-climb but hiking in the crater was jolly. Joe and I will be back to attempt the sea to summit someday!

Haleakala Down-climb  Sucess!

Drove to the summit and did a down-climb of Haleakala. Spent one night at the Paliku cabin and descended from there down the Kaupo Trail. ~9k' descent over 18mi. Dropped a shuttle car at the lower trailhead. Crux is actually finding/driving to the lower trailhead on bad roads.

Beauty  Sucess!

Drove to the top due to time constraints. It was a gorgeous day. Made several stops along the way to see the sights. Loved the way the clouds rolled into the crater. We were able to see Mauna Kea. It was a very very clear day.

Brutal climb  Sucess!

Had to exit the car to stumble the last 100 feet to the little building at the top. Wore my Goretex windbreaker and muttered insanely about "basecamp" throughout, narrowly escaped men in little white coats.

Altiude Conditioning  Sucess!

Windy ocean view drive up to observatory/lookout. Hiked the Sliding Sands Trail down to the small crater Pu'u 'Ula'ula then jogged back up in half the time. This is a good altitude conditioning at 10,000 feet no matter how slow/fast you are. This trail might look like it belongs on the planet Mars hiking up Mons Olympus!

good time on Maui  Sucess!

I spent a couple of days roaming around Haleakala. I drove the Hana Highway to the Kipahulu coast area and saw the awesome waterfall, and took a dip in Oheo Gulch. I then drove to the the top to see a great sunset. The next day I went back and did parts of the sliding sands trail, which is great. What an amazing place!

Drive-in summit  Sucess!

How can you fail if you don't run out of gas?

Visited several times while stationed at Pearl from 1978-1982. Always wanted to do some overnights in their cabins, but my visitors never were the "overnight" type.

Poor Mom and Dad  Sucess!

My bf and I left my parents at the top while we went for a long trail run down into the crater and across to another trailhead where they were supposed to pick us up. They wanted to hike down the crater a little ways, so we forewarned them about how easy going down would be and not to underestimate having to hike back up the trail with the altitude. Well, over eight hours later and an hour overdue, we got worried and started walking back up the road to the top. Eventually, we found them, but long story short, guess what happened?

Done...  Sucess!

The hardest summit ever...I almost couldn't do the 50 feet between the parking lot and the top. In the end I conquered.

Cheated  Sucess!

Drove to the top. Checked out the sunrise. Looked around the summit for a bit. Went to the beach for some relaxation. I only felt guilty for a little while.

No Board Shorts  Sucess!

A friend and I drove to the top, took some photos and hiked around a little bit. Even high elevations in Hawaii can be harsh; the wind was some of the most intense I have experienced. It's a whole other world compared to the beach. This was the first time I had ever been at sea level and over 10,000ft in one day.

A very nice day  Sucess!

Hiked down Sliding Sands, across to the Bottomless Pit and up the Halemauu trail courtesy of Banana Bungalow. Very diverse environment and flora. Met quite a few people on horseback, who didn't seem to be enjoying themselves too much. Silversword in bloom. Clouds set in above Koolau Gap unfortunately, obscuring the views, turning the place into something resembling the Emyn Muil... Fantastic sunset from the summit (dress warmly)!

Drove to the top  Sucess!

I was browsing through the site and realized this was a mountain page. My parents drove me to the top when we visited Maui. I don't remember much except for the observatory and the big crater.

beach to summit on foot  Sucess!

ty and i started our hike on the beach just past kaupo at 5:30pm. we hiked up the kaupo gap. strong wind and rain during the night made it very cold. made it to the summit by 4:50am in time to huddle in the summit pavilion for sunrise. dozens of tourists piled in to the pavilion to photograph the sunrise in the protection from the wind. some nice tourists gave us a ride back down the mountain. we've been thinking about hiking beach to summit in one push since we moved here nine months ago. glad to have finally done it. very special mountain! :)

Swallowed my Pride  Sucess!

I swallowed my pride and drove up. I have to say if you are too hard core to do that then you are missing out on one of the most amazing sunrises on the planet.

Drove up, rode down  Sucess!

I was driven up to top, spent about 1/2 hour looking around, and then got on my rented mtn. bike for the sweet 27 mile downhill ride.
