Halfway There

This is about the midway point to Southwest Butte. Here the trail drops off a high broad ridge into the basin below before heading to the left and off the photo. The north margin of the summit is on the left edge of the photo. An alternate route would be via the north ridge that dominates this photo. To reach John Day Mountain continue on this trail, but follow the ridge to the west when the trail turns off to Southwest Butte. The trail may be intermittent due to low use and a past fire. July 2007
