Very Happy Canyon!  Sucess!

Finally got out here using the Poison Springs route. Driving out the Black Jump road can be anxiety inducing- it's doable though. I made it 4 miles (out of about 5.5) before quitting and hiking from there. You sure wouldn't want to have a breakdown out here! My friends mountain biked from our camp on the PSR pretty much all the way to where the route drops down to the river by the petrified logs, and that seemed like a better way to do it. The narrows are great, but I think that the total of all the scenery on the route is what makes this hike so good- no wonder it seems to be gaining popularity. The DD is such an awesome, deep gorge! I'll probably still want to come back in a few years to do the Miners Route...

Good Friday  Sucess!

We drove down Poison Springs Rd. to the the Black Jump 4x4 road. From there we took the obvious fork in the road up the Black Jump. The car showed this to be roughly 16.6 miles to the parking area and to our surprise, it took right at two hours. We had a GMC Terrain and even saw a Toyota RAV4 at the top. The 4x4 road was rutted out in places, but was doable as long as you took it slow. The road basically ends and the trail begins. From there it took us about 2 hours until we were on the other side of the river. Exploring the canyon was really cool as we ventured about 40 minutes inside. We pretty much went until we felt like we were coming out the other side and footprints became scarce. For whatever reason, the trip back out was 20 minutes faster than the trip down. I'm going to guess this had to do with better route finding despite the fact that blisters had set in about 45 minutes in to the hike back up. In the end it was a great way to spend Good Friday and I hope I can come back some day.

Poison Springs Route  Sucess!

We drove down Poison Spring Canyon 11.2 miles, took the fork on the left up the really bad old Miner's track another 4.7 miles, and then we hiked around ten miles round trip into the canyon. Didn't see a soul and no footprints crossing the Dirty Devil. 7 hours hiking, 6 hours driving (3 Each way) for 13 hours pavement to pavement from Highway 95. Incredible canyon. Want to go back.

Bert Mesa

Well I'm pretty new to exploring in Utah and I didn't actually get down to the Dirty Devil or the Happy Canyon narrows, but I spent a couple nights at Burr Point and a long day exploring all over Bert Mesa and really fell in love with this area. There is quite an impressive dugway leading down to the mesa and out near the highpoint of the mesa I stumbled across the site of a plane crash where 2 men died back in 1983. Lots of debris and a plaque. I can't wait to get back here and do the Miners Rappel and get down to the river for some more exploring, but I'll have to either get some climbing gear and leave the dogs behind next time or take the Poison Springs route. I hope no one is actually reading this because I would like to have the place to myself again when I return!

Happy from poison spring  Sucess!

We drove the rode down poison spring in a honda passport made it pretty far just short of were the bluff turns north along the dirty devil and decided to camp there. great views of the canyon. next day set out for happy along old miners track. Couldnt find the trail markers down to happy so blazed our own trail and got cliffed out multiple times and had to traverse till we found the trail. found happy and walked till the slot ends. nothing to technically a couple body planks over water and some rock climbing. no rope or wetsuit needed. Then headed back to the car aka poison spring canyon. 18-19 miles round trip but very flat most of the way.

Happy  Sucess!

I did this one with my wife Kimberly from the Poison Springs Canyon area over President's Day Weekend 1999.

We spend three days exploring the area. The river is quite cold in February, but I've crossed it several times then.
