Go from White Oak  Sucess!

Did the short hike from Hawksbill parking lot and it was super casual. Have hiked White Oak Canyon before, but have not linked the two yet. Highly suggest doing that!

Fantastic views  Sucess!

My favorite route is Cedar Run via the White Oak Canyon trailhead. It's a good workout with a 3000' gain. The views from the summite are some of the best in the east.

In winter, during times of significant snow and ice, crampons and axe may come in handy. There are a few places along Cedar Run where a slip wil send you sliding 50'-70' down sideways into the stream.

Beautiful Winter Day  Sucess!

A sunny day in December is definitely the time to tour Skyline Drive. The park was almost deserted! Enjoyed the brief walk to the top and unobstructed 50-mile views!

Hawksbill Mountain  Sucess!

Nice 2.9 mile loop that challenged my four year old daughter, but the whole family made the summit and back in 2 hours. The summit had scattered snow on the ground and ice on the tree branches. A great view. A nice easy trek for families. My wife admitted that she was on the look-out for bears, since we had seen four the previous day, but none were sighted this day.

7x  Sucess!

I've climbed Hawksbill many different ways. Once I did it as part of a big loop that also included Old Rag, Robertson Mountain, and Stony Man. On another occasion I climbed it from Mt. Zion Church in Luray, also climbing Nakedtop along the way - over 18 miles roundtrip. I have descended from Hawksbill Gap alongside Hawksbill Creek to see the numerous falls there, then ascended the north slopes of Nakedtop to its summit and continued to the summit of Hawksbill. Most recently I climbed it from the tiny town of Ida, bushwhacking up Nakedtop first, then hiking up Hawksbill, then taking the AT north to Pollock Knob, finally bushwhacking west back to Ida.

Favorite hike in HS  Sucess!

Hiked up Hawksbill as often as I could when in high school (which, since I didn't own a car until senior year, meant as often as I could talk my parents into it).

fine views  Sucess!

Shenandoah is a magical place. Nothing overly-dramatic about it, but it slowly grows on you like drinking scotch.

Completely Alone  Sucess!

Wanted a challenge so I started at the base of Cedar Run and the lower Whiteoak Canyon Parking lot. Hiked up Cedar Run to Hawksbill. A modest ~3300 feet of elevation gain and about 8 miles round trip coming back down Cedar Run. Little bit of snow and it was about 10 degrees at the top. Saw not a soul until the lower parking lot.

From Skyline Drive  Sucess!

While spending one on one time with my daughter, we hiked to the summit of this peak. Sometimes the excitement of the moment is lost on our children, but I think she will remember these moments later.

Backpacked up in 1966!  Sucess!

And spent the night in the shelter with a group of Girl Scouts. I remember this so well because when we woke up on Sunday morning fog filled the entire valley below us and we felt like we were floating above the clouds. It was truly a magical hiking experience! Amazingly, I'm still backpacking although not as far and not carrying as much (LOL)!
