Hayford with the DPS14 members of Sierra Club Desert Peaks Section successfully summited this Ultra just SE of Area 51 in beautiful weather. All previous trip reports that I could find are accurate, except that one report and my own GPS find it is 5.7 miles to the cabin and 8.01 miles one way to the summit. We spent the previous night and the subsequent night at the trailhead which is a great camp site for a large group. The trail to the cabin is occasionally tedious (walking on loose gravel) but all and all easier than expected, and gains 1400 of elevation without a sweat. Some impressive rock formations and cliffs en route, including one arch or window.
The nicely refurbished cabin now has water piped down from the spring and was flowing well in June in this wet year. The group briefly enjoyed the very active bird watching at this site.
We took a route from the cabin to the summit which I've read in one report but is not one of the two routes in the DPS book. This goes directly up the trail from the cabin just past the Wiregrass Spring and then gains the ridgeline just NW of the spring, then up the ridge up to the summit, with a very short descent at a saddle en route. This for the most part is an easy straight forward route, with only 10 feet of class II, and often has a good use trail (which our group of 14 made more useful, no doubt!)
8 hours round trip including long rest on summit. Two wheel drive vehicles made it to trailhead, but tedious.

Deadman CanyonStill a lot of snow on the north facing slopes- luckily the Hayford approach is almost entirely south facing. Last mile of the canyon was all hard packed snow. Took the ducked use trail for much of the route, but needed to frequently detour around snowfields (especially on the final leg up the west slope of the peak)

DEADMANNo, not me..the canyon. Nice trip up the typical route past the cabin to the SW ridge and back. The canyon is spectacular in the afternoon sun - a must see! Fortunately the summer temps were still not here yet, so the hike temp was quite enjoyable.

via Air plane crash siteAfter we made it to the cabin in 2 hour, we have decided to check the air plane crash site first. After we checked the site, we climbed the hill that was the opposite side of the Hayford Peak. We tried to follow the ridge line instead of scramble down and up to the Hayford. But we found out that ridge line didn't connected to the Hayford Peak after we climed up and down 3 hills. It turned to big loop hike. 20 miles and more than 5,000 ft total elevation gain.

Made it a loop route,My roommate and I did this today as a day hike. We started in Deadman Canyon then headed north from the cabin to the summit. Instead of descending the same route we decided to follow the dry stream bed to the east of the summit and it ended up taking us to the south edge of the cabin. If you want to make this hike a little easier on the climb up then that dry stream bed certainly seems like an more mellow climb. Great climb all around and I certainly want to return to the cabin sometime to camp out.

Deadman CanyonVery cool area - I loved how the terrain changed as we went into the canyon. The cabin was very cool also. I did this as a dayhike and did Charleston the day before.

FinallyAfter having this peak on my "to do" list for 20+ years, I climbed it today after getting a last minute invite from my brother, Barton last night. Joining us were Dick Wimmer (hike organizer), his son-in-law Aaron, Scott Seegmiller, Alan Pinkerton, Rick Holmes and several other of Dick's hiking buddies. Weather was nice for May (not too hot). There were still patches of snow on the north-facing slopes.

Great dayhikeSummited Hayford via deadman cyn in four hours. Snow was patchy up near the cabin and was patchy along the ridgeline. Nice, well marked route. Clear, cool, light winds. Could see the snow capped Sierra crest on the far western horizon. Great day on the mountain.

Deadman Canyon & cross country routeRedsplashman (see below entry) and my self had the mountain all to our selves as snow made the peak a bit more interesting. Sacha was a great hiking companion and we had an enjoyable day and it was nice to get this one in the winter.

Route Climbed: Deadman Canyon (duh)summited this dry peak with a great climbing partner. we left extra water in the cabin which got stolen by some kids that were looking for waterfalls to play in. we had the last laugh when we told them that they had hiked into the wrong mountain range. that must have hurt after hiking four miles down a rocky wash in flip-flops. otherwise a great day, and great start to my four day climbing adventure.
