I made the approach from the gate via mountain bike. It took me a bit to find the overgrown road just east of a main junction, where I left my bike. I then followed the road around the north side of the mountain and tried to ascend from there. After gaining a decent viewpoint of the summit, I decided it looked a bit far off and it would be easier to follow the road back to the east side of the mountain and ascend from there. It was.
I was trying to get to 10-4 but a logging operation was blocking the way not far from the Haystack turn-off. I'd biked 2 miles to get there so I didn't want that effort wasted. Would have liked better weather, summit is somewhat open. Some pics, a map at http://www.willhiteweb.com/washington/gold_bar/haystack/toc_rock_230.htm
Good Scramble To The Summit Date Climbed: Jul 28, 2008
The walk along the forest roads were fairly uneventful, although a mountain beaver crossed my path at one point. The scramble to the summit was fun; I enjoy these types of "choose your own adventure because there is no definitive trail" summit hikes.
