Date Climbed: May 5, 2016
Great climb yesterday Cinco de Mayo 2016. Was a bit overcast, but it's a good hike (almost 4 miles uphill) so the cool air was welcome. We got there too late to make it to the real summit, but the lookout was incredible. Going back to take the summit in a few weeks. Only a very tiny patch of snow on the ground. Rest of way was clear

Hiked with my Dad. Snow on the north side stopped us from hitting the summit. Nearly got there though. Went and tagged Henline Falls afterwards, cool mine there!

Nice hike with lots to see on the way. The view from the lookout site was spectacular even with low cloud cover (never saw a view of Mt. Jefferson). Took the trail to the true summit but didn't think it was really worth it.

Fairly quick up and back; lots of cool stuff to see & couldn't be in a more beautiful area of the state. Found some great new swimming holes along the N. Fork (sooooo nice after a summer's end hike)

If you choose to take this route, study the map first. A GPS/compass will save you alot of time. Trail gets very sketchy after the creek crossing. I flagged with orange ribbon from the creek out through the clear cut area. I was actually headed to summit Ogle Mountain but I ran out of time so I headed up through the back door of Henline Mtn. Then caught the main trail down the mountain. I've attached a topo and route pic.

6/29/03 - Finally made it up to the true summit. Doing a conditioning run. Summit is pretty anti-climactic, just a mound covered in trees with no views. Oh well. Good views from the lookout site.
5/21/05 - Hiked up with my girlfriend. Great views and a fun hike.
5/3/09 With Luna.
11/26/15 With Luna to true summit. Unusual day in that the road in was icy but up on the mountain I hiked in a base layer shirt in warm sun. Some snow above 3000 feet but nothing much.

Nice hike again to the lookout site where the sun was close to setting. A register has been placed in a cairn there. A new trail has also been cleared and flagged to the true summit.

Deep snow and fading daylight turned me around at about 3800 feet. Bring snowshoes and an ice axe if you want to try this in winter.

A nice hike on a sunny day to the lookout site. I saw some strange-looking mushrooms next to the trail. The trail to the true summit looked overgrown and unmaintained.

February, 2003 - Encountered snow about halfway up and put on snowshoes. had a nice view of Battle ax and Jefferson from the sight of the old lookout. took a while to find the true summit. This was a pretty nice little snowshoe climb.
August 16, 2004 - I thought it would be interesting to see this one without snow on it. I started just before daybreak, and reached the old lookout area at sunrise. The ridge on the way to the real summit was kind of neat, but i think this one is a lot more fun done in winter. It would probably also be neat during wildflower season, since there is a lot of beargrass and rhododendron. I went on to do Whetstone mountain after this.

Went back to try to finish this one up. Took snowshoes this time and had a beautiful morning when I started with some rare January sunshine in Oregon. Took all the pictures again that I thought I had taken last week when I forgot to put film in my camera. Got to the base of the rock at the old lookout when I ran into some steep (probably 50 - 60 degree) ice/snow that I didn't feel too safe in with the smaller crampons that are on the snowshoes and I lost the trail. (Why didn't I bring my regular crampons and ice axe?!) Had to descend a snow field at a snail's pace and clouds rolled in. By the time I got back to the real trail, I figured I had wasted too much daylight so I headed back again without reaching the true summit.
On the way down I met a woman who was hiking who said she was a member of the Chemeketans and knew and climbed with Hammer. She said she is in his climbing party that is going to Mexico this Friday. Talked to her for a long time and learned she had been with Hammer on some of his posted summits. Small world!
Also learned from her that the Chemeketans had flagged a trail to the true summit sometime late last year. Possibly will have a real trail to the summit this year. She had made it to near the true summit last November but said the routefinding was difficult.
Looks like I am going to have to wait a bit longer until the ice/snow melts or until I bring the proper gear.
Note: went back 1/20/02 with rope, pickets, crampons, ice axe and 2 friends but heavy snow down even below 1000 feet prevented us from getting to the trailhead.

Went back to finish this little mountain up and hit the true summit. Took some neat pictures of the cliffs and rockfields and postholed through steep snow to just below the lookout site when I realized I had not put any film in my camera. Extremely mad now so I decided to do some snow climbing but got into a spot where it went vertical and I had to downclimb since I was in polypro pants and shorts and a jacket with no technical gear and I was alone. The clouds had held off too and the photos I got would have been cool but instead of continue on to the true summit, I turned back and figured I'll come back the next day if the weather holds. This neat little mountain is starting to piss me off.
