My ties to Hesperus

Hesperus Mountain is a sacred mountain to the Navajo people or Dine'. I've worked for the Navajo people at IHS hospitals for the last 13 years. I currently work at the Northern Navajo Indian Medical Center in Shiprock, NM. I live in Mancos, CO. Hesperus was the very first mountain I summited. For several different reasons, I decided to climb it again this year. It is the main feature on the horizon from my back patio, so I often sit and look at it while pondering life's greater mysteries and troubles.

I am also teaching mountaineering techniques to my friend Cheryl. Until Saturday, 6/5/2010, she had never summited a mountain or stood on the ground at 13,232. Hesperus is a very prominent mountain and has some of the best summit views available in CO.
