Crater Lake 7 Summits (Hillman Peak)  Sucess!

Climbed as part of our project 8K, and was one of the 7 summits we hit on the rim in the same day. Hillman isn't super technical, but there is no defined trail to the top. Small scramble up the rocks toward the top. Recommend climbing from the North side of the mountain, as anything from the South (Watchman) side leads to exposure on the lake side (don't look down).

Here's the video of the 7 summit day:

12 peaks in 2 days  Sucess!

A solo trip which I started with Misery Ridge at Smith Rock. From there I stopped for a hike up Black Butte on my way to Crater Lake. At the lake I hiked up the 5 primary peaklets around the lake and a few minor ones before driving to Yamsay Mountain for the final hike. See the trip report.

West Rim Duo  Sucess!

My nephew and I climbed Watchman and Hillman in the morning on our way out after a couple of days in the Park. This was the best weather day and we were sad to leave, but had to get back to PDX. Hillman was our favorite of the trip, a fun little summit with great views!

Nice, easy scramble  Sucess!

After doing Watchman on a chilly September morning, Ron and I hiked up this one and finished with the scramble. Enjoyed views from North Sister to Shasta. Watched the boat take people back from Wizard Island below. Excellent views.

Great Snow and Ice Climb  Sucess!

Climbed Hillman a few days after a big snowstorm. Great hike in along the West Rim Road, with the pine trees all encased in ice. The climb to the top of the summit block was probably actually easier than it is in summer, as the whole thing was just a huge block of ice. Took just a little bit of front-pointing to get up the last fifty feet or so, but the view was totally worth it. Highly recommend climbing around Crater Lake in winter!

A quick encounter  Sucess!

I ran up this immediately after waking up below the protection of the Watchman. The day prior I had hiked/climbed over 24 miles when I tagged East Peak and Bailey. I was tired, but it was a good day.

Critter Lake  Sucess!

fun little hike - we scrambled up the rocks on the south side from the parking lot and dropped down via the scree on the other side - got a ticket earlier in the day for hiking off-trail into the crater, but this hike helped make the day a good one

Fun scramble  Sucess!

After knocking out Mt Scott earlier in the day, me and a guy from NJ I met while at the Mt Scott L.O. drove over and scrambled up to the summit of Hillman Peak via the south ridge, then down the north face and out to the pinnacle just to the east of the Hillman Peak summit, an exhilerating little rock climb. A quick hike but very fun!

Extreme exposure!  Sucess!

A quick but satifying hike and than scramble. I summited via the south then actually skirted the east side. Kinda loose, scary exposure. Great views of the lake and the southern oregon cascades.

South side?  Sucess!

Drove up after work (worked in Roseburg for 9 months :-( )and hiked up from the saddle between Hillamn and the Watchman. Still lots of snow. People in the parking lot looked at me like I was crazy when I put on my pack, gaters, and grabed my ice axe. One couple even watched me walk off until I was out of site. Some of the best views in the park.

Route Climbed: West Ridge Date Climbed: September 08, 2004  Sucess!

I did this right after watching the sunrise from the Watchman. I stupidly thought I was at the base of the summit pinnacle, and climbed what I thought was it's north face, but it was in fact a mass of rotten rocks that all moved when i grabbed them. Had a nice view from the top and descended the correct easy way.

Route Climbed: North & South sides of pinnacle Date Climbed: 30 September 2001  Sucess!

Reese (5) insisted on summiting due to hearing from his older brother that Dad's day pack contained treats reserved only for the top. Had to boost him up some sections on the north side of the pinnacle. (Please don't tell his mother.)
