You can actually do with much less rope if you bypass R1. To do this, head left from the ledges at the first of the rappels and do a scary, but short 5.6 exposed traverse over to the adjacent slot. This can be downclimbed with some skill.
I did the traverse without a rope, but after doing it, I kind of had second thoughts. You can protect the traverse for all but the last person by having someone climb up above the slot and protecting the ledge from above.
The alternative above is definitely more challenging and interesting than doing the rappel and gives you some more slot.
