Smoky day
Very nice day and the winds were gusty but easily tolerated. This was my first time above 10,000 ft and humbled by the difference. A puff of smoke in the morning about 30 miles to the south became a blanket of smoke covering 180 degress of the view by the afternoon. Interesting day and a great hike.

Humphreys Trail Solo
I was employed at Grand Canyon NP. While there, somebody
informed me how Humphreys was often raked by the wind.
I checked the weather, and finally went for it. It was a
beautiful day, really fun looking down on Inner Basin to
the east. I remember meeting two people & a dog at the windy summit. This is the top of Arizona!

Surprisingly Tricky
Route finding was a bit difficult after the substantial avalanche a few months earlier. We made it, but it took us quite a while. After the ordeal of getting to the top, we spotted dogs and a man sporting sandals and a hawaiian shirt. Did we miss a sign?

Did not know about high wind advisory - did not even feel wind until we reached ridge. My friend huddled himself into a notch between boulders and after not much debate, we retreated down with only 600 feet to go.

Gone With the Wind
Cloudless skies. 10% precip chance. No problems, right? Wrong. After launching our hike from the base of the Hart Prairie chair lift (3 J-johns, all without toilet paper!), menacing winds became evident as we approached the saddle. The entire west side of the mountains was blanketed with thick hoar frost - most elegant had it not been for the raging winds up high. Making it to the summit took determination and occasional shelter behind either boulders or the east side of the ridge. Sub-freezing temps and 40 mph winds make for an interesting foe. Ben and I reached the summit in 3+03 and gladly took refuge in the rock wind break. Beautiful hike, though. Climbed for 2nd time 9-12-08 with Brent and Lee. This time there was virtually no wind and what a difference that made! I submitted a short trip report about this second hike and it can be found on the page for Wheeler Peak (NM) under the title about "Two-fers." #3 10-26-12 Mit besonderer Begleiterin. Schoener Tag, ein bisschen Wind oben, fast kein Schnee. 3+16 nach oben. #4 3-1-13. First winter ascent-solo. Followed route described in the "comments" section by Jeff12633. Horrendous north winds on the entire route above the bomber wreckage, especially on the ridge leading to the summit ridge. Did not don my ss until the descent. 3+26 up, 2+18 down.

Beautiful clear day
Agree with some of the other posts that this peak is very windy on top, but it is a great hike and a great view once on top. I could see the red rocks of Sedona the day I summited.
Climbed this in July 1998. It seemed like a long slog through the forest, but once we reached the saddle, my wife stayed behind and I humped it to the top as quick as I could. There sure were a lot of bugs!
Day trip from Vegas. Left 1:30am, hit the trail at around 6am. Summited Humphreys and then Agassiz and back down around 1:30pm.
Back to Vegas around 7pm. All around a great day.
My highest hike by some 4,500 feet. Left Phoenix at 5 AM with my mother and proceeded straight up the trail. 3 hours to saddle, where my mother had to stop due to the altitude, and another 50 mins to the top. Beautiful views on top, in the 50s, and only a hearty breeze or two. I had a bit of a nasty altitude headache on the way down, but I made the top!
I WILL be back, though I'll be sure to acclimate in Flagstaff next time!
Climbed Humphrey's after a business trip to PHX and a job interview that would move me to Flagstaff in December 1999. Needless to day I climbed Humphrey's a few more times after I moved there...great mountain!!!

Need Snowshoes
Lots of snow on the trail still. Next time I need snowshoes, lots of needless effort without them. Great hike.
A great half day outing on a beautiful mountain. Go in fall and look down into a colorful Inner Basin.

what a wind
What a nice hike! I have never been this high before. it was very windy day. North Rim of Grand Canyon was on fire, i dont know if it is still going on, you could see the smoke from Humphrey's Peak, covering very long distance. I feel good going to the top after coming from the city of San Francisco. i wont forget this day. if you are around this beautiful mountain you should not miss this hike.

Our first successful Humphreys climb - we'd been thwarted twice already. Got to the summit in a bit less than 3 hours to be greeted with steady 40 mph winds with 60 mph gusts and threatening clouds. We got down FAST, and luckily the weather cleared up once we got back to the saddle. This is the first mountain I've climbed where getting down feels like it takes as long as getting up. About five hours r/t.

Got sugar?
First trip over 10000 (yes, I'm finally signing the log) It was ugly. Didn't hydrate properly or eat properly or, well, do much properly. I gained the summit eventually and gained a lot more in the process (like know-how). Climbed several times since w/o the drama. It's great to have this little slice of tundra and forestry in the middle of the desert.

I hiked up to the saddle on a visit to Flagstaff, didn't get a chance to go back and summit. Nice hike, lots of people that day.

Solid hike
Definitely a worthwhile hike. Upper reaches of the trail are a bit hard to follow in spots, and could be better marked to avoid damage to fragile tundra environment. Stunning view from my sixth state highpoint.
It was a four hour hike to the summit, but I took my time and stopped frequently to take pictures of things, so it's probably an hour or half hour shorter for a focused hiker. Was a bit frustrating comin' down as I'd hoped to descend quickly, but rocky and tree-root-y trail makes for slower descent than average. Six hour hike, round trip.
Oh, and a cute boy leavin' the summit just as I came up. Nice smile. : )

From SnowbowlDay trip from Vegas. Left 1:30am, hit the trail at around 6am. Summited Humphreys and then Agassiz and back down around 1:30pm.
Back to Vegas around 7pm. All around a great day.

Humphrey's TrailDidn't get on the mountain until 4pm. Reached the summit late. We camped right now top! =-] great memories climbing with B-Fro.
