Hungry Bear

Hungry Bear

I was excited for the opportunity to watch the black bear forage for food for several minutes, seen here at 7700 feet along the Copper Creek Trail near Tent Meadow May 2010

Re: great opportunity...

Thanks Dow! It was a great moment. I've seen bears many times but my adrenaline really got going this time. One of those times where I was torn between taking pictures and video, yet was lucky enough to get a bit of both.

And the bear just went about its business searching for food all the while.

Incredible luck...

to run into a none aggressive one. I would have been walking backwards very quietly.
Great photo op, Chad. How far away were you? It looks like you zoomed some.

Re: Incredible luck...

Oh yes- I zoomed in 3.8x, and then edited it to be vertical instead of horizontal. But it mostly isn't real sharp because of the low light- very cloudy and in the forest- the camera was giving me the stabilization warning and I was too excited to keep still.

About 60-70 feet away, well under 100 for certain. Another way to look at it, he could have caught me in a sprint in about 3 seconds. The bear looked at me before I spotted it even, and then it just went about its business.

Re: wow

Thank you! Give it time, and after a few weekends in Sequoia or Kings Canyon you'll see one for sure. I've run across two already this year, though this one was the far better experience.

Re: hungry

He was, and not even the least bit interested in me either. Just walked around digging through bark for food. Thanks!

Beautiful Color!

I love his/her coloring..beautiful cinnamon color! I love the Bears! I have only seen one bear in the wild in all my years of hiking/backpacking and quite a few passing through our yard and in neighborhoods which is not good..should be the other way around.
Looks like that tree is a big treat for this special Bear!

Re: Beautiful Color!

That tree and several others. He just went from tree to tree getting what he could.

I've never seen one near Tahoe, but lots down in SEKI, always a thrill though.
