The CampgroundColdbrook Campground is a small campground located along San Gabriel Canyon Road (Route 39 as it is universally called). As of summer 2007, the gate is closed at mile marker 32.12 in an area known as the "Valley of the Moon". Continuing past this point north brings you to Coldbrook within 1/4 of a mile.
 Signs at the gate |
Peak 5495 is directly to the west, with Smith Mountain southwest. Assuming they ever open this road back up, Coldbrook offers access to the entire mt Hawkins area. It is a good staging point for anyone who wishes to ascend South Mt Hawkins using Alpine Canyon.
This campground is currently closed due to "fire damage"... which there is very little of. However, as can be seen on weekends and in the picture of the dumpster, people still go here on a regular basis. Apparently, they have access to the keys opening the gate closing R39 at "Valley of the Moon".
Ah, this is the life! |
The campground itself offers few facilities. It is mostly a glorified parking lot. There are some faucets that as of summer 2007, are turned off. The San Gabriel River flows past to the east, and is an adequete water source in the driest years (of which 2007 was). Getting ThereThis campground is directly off Route 39. The best method of access currently (Fall 2007) is to exit the 210 freeway onto Azusa Avenue, and take it north. It becomes San Gabriel Canyon Road/R39. Simply take R39 north until you reach the gate at mile marker 32.12. Coldbrook is beyond the gate about 1/4 mile north. Images
