| Tonka | Unexpected climb. ![]() Date Climbed: Sep 21, 2012 | |
| We were in town for a few days and Friday was to be our easy day. We wanted to go into the basin and check out Cobb, scope it out and maybe give it a try but we kept going and once up high in the basin we went for the sadle and well... Was nice because the fall weather was stable (9:30 a.m start) and the sun was still out later (6:30 p.m. finish). Did not see one person the whole day until we were back near the TH. Had a great day except for the rock that fliped into may ankle causing a good cut and bruise. | ||

| Technically easy, really a vigorous hike with a steep scramble over medium to large boulders at end. However, you will need to be fit to do this in one day. Mountain biking the first 2.5-3 miles is the only way in my opinion: much quicker, easier and more fun. The wildflowers, views and a nice cascade in the creek to the right of the trail .5 to 1.0 mile above the small pond at 8700 feet are great. I would repeat this hike/summit. | ||

| Great views all around, just beat the snow by a few weeks. Good hike in, saw mountain goats for the first time. What's not to like? | ||

| Day climbed from Boise. Biked the first 3 miles. Wildflowers like I've not seen in years, and with rare, unreal color combinations.. Meadows of pure aromatic lupine too. Rain threatened all day and we got sprinkled on several times, but no thunder til late. Descended the E gully. The downhill bike ride out was so much fun after a long day on foot. | ||

| I've been living in the state for about a month now, and I finally got around to doing a 12er. There are some awesome views from the top. I can't wait to do some more now. | ||

| What was the snow like on Hyndman? I'll be in ID in a week and would like to hike it with my wife (she has very little experience). I'd really appreciate your assessment -- could it be climbed as a class 2 without crampons, yet? Thanks so much for any input. | ||

| Sorry i didn't see this. You have probably come and gone. I think the standard route would have had some snow still on it. I love this website but for ID peak summiting beta try the message board at idahosummits(dot)com. very active group and spread around the state so someone usually knows something. again, sorry i missed your post. I hope you were successful. | ||

| We chose to go straight up instead of making the saddle and going up that way. The weather had been off and on, so we decided moving fast was best. The weather was beautiful on our side of the mountain, but when we hit the summit we discovered a huge storm waiting for us at the top and on the other side moving our way. We had to hurry down. Beautiful country and a great approach hike in and out. | ||

| Longer hike than anticipated, but, well worth the view once at the summit. DO NOT : DO NOT go directly down from the summit!! Head back over to the saddle! TONE of loose scree, loose talus, and huge loose boulders. Crushed my foot twice, fell nearly 30 times. Not worth the minor distance difference. Wasn't safe. BUT, other than that, excellent climb! haha! | ||

| Everyone was having a good time no matter what the activity. Climbers, day hikers, photographers, backpackers. Well, maybe not the backpackers lugging it up the sagebrush covered hill. Had some post climb chow at a place called The Spud in Hailey. Now that place has some funk to it. Gotta love the coasters. | ||

| A very fun scramble up the ridge. Summited with another solo climber and a group of 4 from Wa. I did Galena Peak the day before which made for sore legs to start, and a grim death march back to the car. I love it! My first 12er! | ||

| great day for a hike of Hyndman. My dog and I completed out first Idaho 12er. The trail was very well marked, I would definitely recommend staying to the right while on the ridge climbing towards the summit. Nothing like sitting up there for 45 minutes with the summit all to ourselves and enjoying the view of the surrounding ranges and the basin. | ||

| Too hot! Napped in the shade above the Yert for hours. Late afternoon, hiked to the lake at 9,000' and went for a swim (over 90 degrees). Spent the night beside this pond. 2nd day up to the top. Spent 4 hours on top. Back down to the pond for another swim and night. Big electrical storm that night! Hiked out 3rd morning. This is the easy and fun way to hike!!! | ||
