could it be...

some "Fe" oxide? Picture is not close up enough but I think I've seen something similar in caves. Colour was due to the metal-mineral captured in the dripping process. "Cu"= green-blue, "Fe"= orange-red, and so on.

Whatever it is, picture is awesome :). I really enjoyed reading your new page and really loved the pictures.

Thanks for the positive feedback.
I was almost sure a caver would comment this. The few times I've been underground I've seen much more of these kind of things than in the open air. "Fe" sounds like a logical answer.

I agree. Only a handful are any good. Most just end up in the junk folder. That's one of the few things I like with digi-photography - not so much wasted film to think about.
