An iconic scene in Rocky Mountain National Park.
A bull elk on the slopes of Flattop Mountain with Longs Peak in the background.
The Trough Route on Longs looks like it could be in good shape.

Voted 10/10 | Great photo. I never tire of looking at elk. They are majestical, strong and smart. | | Posted Jun 25, 2009 12:37 am |

Hasn't voted | Thanks. He definitely had all of those attributes. He was with a young bull, maybe two years old (?), who he seemed to be protecting. I cropped the young one out of this shot, he was standing off to the right. I felt that this captured the majesty better. | | Posted Jun 25, 2009 1:41 pm |

Voted 10/10 | beats those I saw up at the Grand Canyon.
Hey, at least you captured a mountain in the
background, so I'm giving it 10/10 ! | | Posted Jun 25, 2009 1:23 am |

Hasn't voted | Thanks. This guy was big. It's nice that the Park Service put him in such a photogenic location! | | Posted Jun 25, 2009 1:37 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thanks Bob. I've spent a lot of time in RMNP but this was quite the lucky find. I had to move down the trail a bit to get Longs into the frame, but the elk patiently stayed put, not moving off until I had snapped a few shots. | | Posted Jul 7, 2009 11:39 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thanks, it was a lucky deal. My friend was starting to take pictures as we were coming down on to the elk, with just some trees and distant valley in the background. I saw the situation and moved down farther and off to the side before shooting, so I could include Longs. | | Posted Jul 30, 2009 1:42 pm |

Voted 10/10 | I'm not sure which is better, the elk or the shot of Longs. Incredible Pic! | | Posted Feb 20, 2010 9:05 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thanks for your comment! It was a lucky encounter for sure. I had to scramble into the right position standing on some rocks, but the elk cooperated by not moving off until I squeezed off a couple of shots. | | Posted Feb 22, 2010 2:18 am |

Hasn't voted | Thanks Liba. Yes, he was posing for me! I tried to get him to do a Virabhadrasana III like your profile photo, but he would have none of it. | | Posted Feb 22, 2010 4:31 pm |
