The actual summit of Mauna... [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
The actual summit of Mauna...
The actual summit of Mauna Kea. The end of the road is out of view to the left of the saddle in the photo, and "car climbers" sometimes walk the final 100 feet to the summit from here. 8-25-05.

I see you didn't need that ice axe.

Thanks, Scott. All the credit goes to photshop.

No axe, ha ha. There's nothing here steep enough on MK that would require an axe, even with snow. I would love to head back some day in the winter to ski it, though.

The clarity of this picture is intense, the red on blue is out of this world. I was awe-struck when I was up there.

Yeah - it's a hell of a place. I hope I make it back to Hawaii someday.

It's not really too bad. It's a healthy amount of miles and elevation gain, but it's really easy and there's a great trail all the way. The scenery was so unique that we didn't notice the time go by. I think we did it from 10am-4pm, or something like that. It sucks up a whole day on your trip, but I'd say it's totally worth it.

thats not as bad as I thought then. I have heard people really complain about it. Maybe they did another route. Either way it seems like it would be a great experience. Not that Mauna Kea wasn't, but its wierd getting to the top of a mountain and seeing telescopes

"One final paragraph of advice: Do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am — a reluctant enthusiast ... a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it's still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotised by desk calculators. I promise you this; you will outlive the bastards."   --Edward Abbey
