Ipasha Peak, Lithoid Cusp, Mount Merritt [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Ipasha Peak, Lithoid Cusp, Mount Merritt
Head on view, from the east, of (L) Ipasha Peak (9572'), and (R) Mount Merritt (10004'), taken from the Ptarmigan Tunnel to Ahern Pass Goat Trail. The highest jagged point between the two mountains is known as the Lithoid Cusp, and it, and the other spires on this ridge, have never been climbed. There are parts of two glaciers showing in this image: the snow field on Merritt is Old Sun Glacier, it is still active, with huge chunks occasionally calving off; a portion of the Ahern Glacier can be seen at far left, running out of the image (there is an Ipasha Glacier, but it is on the other side of the mountain, and not visible from the east). As a matter of perspective, Merritt's summit is 10004', the snow field at the cliff base is 5525'. Photo by Vernon, July 20, 2005.

i climbed over 20 peaks when i worked in the park in 2001 but this route was the most amazing thing i did that entire summer. i couldn't stop staring at these mountains (except when we had to stare at our feet)

samhLithoid Cusp

Every time someone from Glacier is considering naming their child after some element in the park I always chimed in with my suggestion they name the child Lithoid Cusp.
