Sky Walking [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Sky Walking
Climbers make their way back across the Knife Edge on their descent from Capitol Peak. No, none of us were roped. Everybody but me “tight-roped” the ridge. Bad idea, you can see that if you fall, you are going to fall a long way before something stops you.

That is one place I would not want to be during a storm! Judging by the picture it looks like a storm is coming very soon! Nice photo!

Thanks. Actually, that bit of cloud moved out and was gone within minutes of this picture being taken. No doubt though, bad place to be caught on the wrong side of in a storm!

How far does the ridge run at such a knife edge? Great photo

Thanks. The exposed part of the ridge is only about 100 ft. long. Lots of fun!

looks like a great situation. What do you mean "tight roped" The terminology is new to me?

I think he means that they simply walked across the ridge (a la a tightrope walker in the circus). Definately not the way I'd do it! I'd be on all fours the entire way no matter how long it took me. Great photo!

Yes, “tight-roping” is just walking with one foot in front of the other as you balance on the sharp ridge crest.

yes obviously! I missed the obvious meaning by thinking of "tight-ropes" and such like. Like most simple expressions, very expressive.

Man, that looks like it was a good time! The ridge doesn't look too bad in the picture, as long as it wasn't really windy. Gotta take a jab at you for being the only one to crawl across... :) just kidding... obviously a fall down either side of the ridge would make a great trip turn horrific in a hurry. Most certainly better safe than sorry.

Really captures the sense of what it's like to be on Capitol's Knife Edge!

Great pic. Composition gives a nice sense of exposure. Rather like Crib Goch in North Wales UK, only bigger !

It depends on who you talk to as to what Capitol’s crux is. Many consider the Knife Edge, which is the route’s most exposed section, to be the crux. However many will tell you that the climb over K2 (that high point in the background) is the hardest part. I’ve found that the traverse across the face to the summit has been the part that has given me the most willies. It has never looked good to me from a distance. Once I’m on it, it isn’t that bad. However, on the face you do have to worry about the generally loose rock, and about finding your route (as a general rule, I’ve found that staying higher on the face is better going). The Knife Edge while exposed, is nice solid rock. K2 is pretty solid too. Traversing around K2 is loose, and dangerous, but you don’t need to go that way.

WOW....
I can't stop staring at this picture. There is something so otherworldly and timeless about it. Like its the very edge of the world and you're climbing to take a look over it and into the "great abyss!!" (I think the fog kind of creates that effect)

Excellent shot.
