Fiery sunset over Hallgarter Zange [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Fiery sunset over Hallgarter Zange
Fiery sunset above Hallgarter Zange in the Taunus Mountains right after a spring hailstorm cleared the air. Believe it or not, the colours were just like that. No strings attached. April 12th 2006

Thanks Vid! I'm really happy that I own a SLR-Camera again. This shot would have been impossible to get with either of my digicams. For once, it's a 300mm zoom shot, but more important, no bit of foolish electronics tried to decide what's best for me or the photo. I took about 50 shots at different shutter speeds and apertures but only two or three were really satisfactory, this being one of them.

On the other hand I missed the actual sundown thanks to a pheasant, which distracted me long enough... And I didn't even get a decent shot of it!

Ha! It took me a while to understand the joke in my comment. Well - you don't go shooting pheasants when there are couples around walking their dogs. I guess everybody (including the pheasant) was just so glad to be able to get outside after that hailstorm.

We had quite some freak weather last night. A colleague of mine drove home along a motorway when in a small dell they had 1km of 10cm snow - nothing before, nothing after. Cars went into a spin and he took three hours to get home instead of one...

Thanks! Does anybody really say yowza! anymore? I thought that saying became extinct sometime back in the late seventies. But now that you said it I guess I'll have to grab Frank Zappa's Sheik Yerbootie album just to listen to Dancing Fool...

Yeah, I guess I'm dating myself, eh? I don't think I'd ever actually SAY it, but it's fun to type.

"I'm a dancing foooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool...."

Grazie Lorenzo! Not "as usual" though. Only very now and again I manage one like that.

I believe those colors! Here's a very similar image I took at Big Bend National Park. Thanks for sharing yours!

The difference, however, is that Big Bend is much farther to the south if I am not mistaken. In our latitude we rarely have these kinds of sunsets, at least not in April already.

WOW! Rare as these may be in Germany, they are a bit shy of common here in Colorado, but rarely this intense. And to think, no filters or special lenses. Great timing. The only time I've seen a sunset this intense of red is during a fire a few years back. Thanks for posting this shot.
BTW, I think you have some of the best photos of everyone on this site.

Thanks for the nice comments. However I'm sure you''ll find other SPers with better or more enjayable pictures. But to think that the winter smog of the Rhein Main area produces the same effects as Colorado wildfires is a bit scary.
