The Priest Tower [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
The Priest Tower
Southeast face of The Priest as seen from the summit of The Rectory. The tower is ~350-400 feet tall. Honeymoon Chimney route comes up from the west side. The crux involves either a wide stem (11-) between the main tower and the subsidiary summit or a bolt ladder. Also note that the triangular, dark chimney down lower is where pitch 1 of Honeymoon Chimney ends (though it tunnels thru. from the opposite side). For different perspectives see here and here. Colorado River is in the far background.

I'm no geologist but the guidebooks call this stuff "calcite" deposit. It's all over the formations in CAstle Valley. When untouched by humans, it has a nice, rough grippy consistency. On popular routes however - like Kor-Ingalls on Castleton - it gets polished to achieve a glass-like surface (hard to get any purchase on it then).
Thanks for stopping by.

While in the desert last week I think I drove my partner nuts telling him how badly I want to climb the Priest. I stared at that thing all the way up Jah Man. Nice photo.

Thank you for visiting.

A great tower for sure & Honeymoon Chimney was a fun and memorable route (esp pitch 1)

Should definitely do it next time you're in the area.

....Jah Man ain't too bad either eh? Esp. if you have small hands :)

Radek, as always..thanks!
this is what I set up for a day trip back there, if it makes sense?...going to be hot no doubt...Kor-Ingalls Route, 5.9, if no one below us...rap back down to top of first pitch and then Black Sun, 5.10b, ...move over to Priest, Honeymoon Chimney, 5.9 A0 or 5.11b.....backup Routes via other parties and heat factor....
Castleton, North Chimney, 5.9, Rectory, Empirical Route, 5.9..cheers

sounds like a good trip Dow - if you're going for Priest after KI, I'd suggest rapping North Face route on Castleton BUT I have NOT done that myself so take this with a grain of salt! Just seems as that would put you in direct approach line for HC. Enjoy.

cool, will do if we do it in that order...Radek, which feature should we aim for first, knowing which routes we want? in other words, which is least protected from sun? Thanks

hmmmm - good question. If I recall right, KI gets morning sun I think ??? I'm not sure which way Honeymoon & Empirical face but I believe both have similar orientation.
