Forgiven. It is a type of conk fungus of the polypore family. The are generally found on dead or dying wood and are an agent of decay. This one is fomitopsis pinicola and is quite common in these parts. Another which is very similar is the Artist's Conk. Check out this link: www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/artists_conk.htm
