Gold Hill from near Fourth of July Canyon.
Comments [ Post a Comment ]| CAT404 | COLD DAY IN JULY | | Hasn't voted | Coldest day I ever experienced in July was on a 50 mile BSA hike which included traversing up and over the summit of Gold Hill from Black Mountain above Red River, and down to Bull of the Woods Pasture to camp for the night preparatory to doing Wheeler Peak the next day. It was near 20 degrees with a powerful west wind buffeting us just under the Gold Hill summit where we bunched together for a brief breather and warm up in the afternoon sun - even though we were all layered with practically everything we had in our backpacks. - before crossing the summit and heading down the other side. I never made it up Wheeler. On the way down from Gold Hill we did some trail clearing as part of the 50 mile hike project requirements. In helping move a substantial downed limb from the trail, I slipped the L5 disk in my back. Fortunately, one of our assistant scout masters who remained in the Red River area was camped at Twining. Fortunately, he was also a physician. We sent two senior members of the leadership corps to fetch him. About two hours later they arrived at our Bull of the Woods campsite in his Chevy Blazer. His tests on me at Bull of the Woods confirmed a slipped disk. We never told those we left behind at near sunset how much fun we had bumming around northern New Mexico while they continued the 50 miler. Would love to hear your crossing Gold Hill stories. | | Posted Feb 11, 2005 12:10 am |
