I never finished that book but it's my favorite movie ever and that first chapter of the book is some of the best writing anywhere.
You should check out "Clallam & Clatsop" by Thoedore Winthrop if you enjoyed reading that, I think it is nearly on the same caliber but has the added bonus of being about the Pacific NW and it's volcanoes and native peoples.
