Here's the same scene without the camera set to flash. Compare with this photo taken with flash. Though the flash was off in this case, I had the camera in my hand. There was just enough daylight to allow for a quick shutter speed to minimize blur. But later in the evening, holding the camera simply would not do. A tripod or rigid surface became necessary. See this photo. March 8, 2007.

I actually advise NOT to take the flash, unless trying to take a photograph of someone instead of the lava.
