Miners Castle [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Miners Castle
Miners Castle is perhaps the most famous of the Pictured Rocks landmarks. The cliffs here are but half the size of those a couple miles north but due to the presence of an access road here this is easily the most visited spot in the park.

Yup, and Lake Superior isn't even the worst off! I read recently that it's due to thinner ice packs in the winter the lakes have been subject to greater year-round evaporation, thus the lower lake levels.

Actually only one of the top "turrets" collapsed, not the whole formation. This shot is from back in 2005.
Here's how it looks now.

to have an erroneous thought here on SP !!!

Hey Mister d.w.hike, is Miners Castle a
so-called calcium carbonate (limestone or tufa)
formation? If so, may I include its unique
beauty on my "Calcium Carbonate" album? Thanks!

Great question, I had to hit the books to find an answer. The Pictured Rocks cliffs are primarily sandstone laid down between 2-800 million years ago. I won't attempt to explain as geology is not my area of expertise but the NPS has a good page describing the geologic history of the Pictured Rocks area if you're interested.
