I remember these falls on my first visit to the UP. I've never seen so much tannin in a river! Thanks for the memories.

I was surprised too, not just the tannin but the volume of water itself! I had never visited them just after the snowmelt which I'm sure had everything to do with it.

I remeber standing on the ledge behind and under the falls as a kid. Can you still do that?

Man, you'd have a hell of a time getting down to the bottom of the falls. There's no trail, you'd have to rappel the 50' down to the rivers edge or do a bit of serious (and wet) bushwhacking. I wonder if maybe you're remembering the Lower Falls downstream. They have a couple smaller 10' drops that I have often seen people sitting beneath or behind.
