How Big Are Apple and Pear?

How Big Are Apple and Pear?

Just how big are Apple and Pear in Charon's Garden Wilderness, Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, OK? Situated high above Valley of Boulders, this easily recognized rock formation is deceiving in its actual size. The above image, taken from the rim on the opposite side of Valley of Boulders, gives scale. The four youths are Eagle Scouts from Venture Crew 921 (Bryan, Curtis/cdoiron, Joel and Daniel) who decided to see if they could reach Apple and Pear by scrambling a Class 4 route from Valley of Boulders. Obviously, they were successful; their approach was down the sloping rock face at the center-left. Their exit continued down the same slab, behind Apple and Pear, and then down a steep, rock-filled gully further to the right. Imaged in June 2007.

Re: big

Valley of the Boulders, hundreds of feet below, is full of big boulders like these. It's a great playground! Thanks for looking! --mark d.

Thanks for this image!

I hope to be able to visit the Wichita Mts. as I live near Dallas. I am interested in photography and trail hiking, probably not any tech. stuff. This site should help me get a start gathering info.

Thanks, Slowbutsteady! Yep, you're just a hop and a skip away from the Wichitas. Be sure to visit the newly revised SP Wichita Mtns page, if you haven't already. It's definitely a neat place to go--any time of the year! --mark d.

That's amazing.

Mark,
You're right. Great to see scouts in action. I work with a group of cub scouts so we don't get quite that adventurous.

Re: That's amazing.

Last November the troop took a group of Webelos Scouts to a campout here. The younger Boy Scouts and Webelos hiked the Dog Run Hollow Trail System on the other side of Elk Mountain (which is where Apple and Pear are situated). That's a pretty easy hiking environment. Our crew headed to Philmont this summer also hiked Dog Run Hollow--they were after miles. The older boys, not quite as old as these Eagle Scouts, hiked into Charon's Garden. It's a lot more challenging. We didn't let them run free on the rocks up to Apple and Pear, as we had earlier in the year with our very oldest Scouts. But, they had a great time. Stick with those Cubs and you'll be taking them on great adventures soon enough--they grow up so fast! --mark d.
