The gray-white streaks in the soil are deceiving, but everything that isn't white in the photo is solid ground. What is not visible in the picture is the small gulley that contains a tongue of the glacier. As with other places on the trail, there were holes in the ice that revealed a fairly sizeable torrent of water several meters below the ice.
