I had just stopped at a sparkling little stream to have a drink after a long hot hike up Mount Rohr when I almost stepped on this little fellow. He showed no fear of me and I got up close enough to shoot him and add him to my (photographic ;) bag limit.
Note the feathered legs, feet and toes.

Hasn't voted | Thank you. They are such a special creature of the high mountains, hard to see at times but so enjoyable to observe once found. | | Posted Dec 15, 2007 3:53 am |

Voted 10/10 | to your photographic bag limit!!!
When I was snowshoeing in the Clearwater
Wilderness north of Mount Rainier, I came
across several of these birds in winter.
They were part-way "buried" in the snow,
and just their heads were sticking out.
I think they were using the snow for
insulation & protection, as it was pretty
cold and there were foxes and martins in
the area. Beautiful bird, SteveO !!! | | Posted Feb 12, 2008 12:26 pm |

Voted 10/10 | I almost stepped on a few of those too when hiking in the Rockies. I assume they change their feather color for the summer, don't they?
Cheers,
