It's 275', but seems much longer! It is the last in a series of rappels. The first is 50' and then 150' and then this one. A great end to a magnificent canyon!

acessory cord at the begining. Does that mean there is an easy way up there and you took the 300' rappel down for the adventure?

Hi Vaughn,
The first trips thru Heaps I would go and place a 300' 8mm rope at the base of the last drop. No....once you begin Heaps, whether at the Gunsight entrance or at Phantom Valley entrance, you are committed to going through the entire canyon for the most part. There are numerous rappels during the course of the hike. The last series of drops are 475'total descent with no alternatives other than rapelling. It is a 50' rappel from a small pine tree to a large pine tree. It is then 150' on the next rappel from the large pine tree to some fixed bolt anchors in a small alcove/chimney. From these fixed bolts it is a 275' rappel to the upper emerald pool. By stashing a 300' rope at the base, the rope can be hauled up so the subsequent rapellers can descend on double ropes rather than on one strand of 8mm. Also the rope stashed is one rope less that needs to be carried through the canyon. I carry 1-100' rope, 2-150' ropes and 1 300' rope with me when I begin the hike.
