This is my husband's photo, but I have his permission to post it.
This Ringtail Cat was spotted in Calico Basin area of Red Rocks, Nevada in February 2008.
Ringtail Cats (Bassariscus astutus) are not really cats. They are members of the raccoon family, Procyonidae. Note the black ring markings on the animal’s tail. This is where their names comes from. Ringtails are great climbers and often make their homes in mountainous terrain, rock crevices and under cliffs.

Voted 10/10 | This is an awesome photo. We have a Ringtail slot canyon in Escalante. I think it may have been named after the ringtail cat because it is a very dark canyon that doesn’t see a lot people. It’s a good place for them to hide. | | Posted Feb 13, 2008 3:24 am |

Hasn't voted | Thank you mountaingazelle. Escalante seems so vast and wild. It must be full of wildlife. I have been there only once for a short trip in sketchy weather(thunderstoms). | | Posted Feb 14, 2008 2:26 am |

Voted 10/10 | Are you sure you got permission from
Henry to post this photo? Nice. The
lighting seems to be perfect. Was this
Henry's first meeting with one during
the day? Are you familiar with the
Hollywood movie, "Doctor Doolittle?"
Your special bond (and Henrys) with
the natural world is amazing!!! | | Posted Feb 17, 2008 7:45 pm |
